Pumphertson Juniors 0 Linlithgow Rose 7
Saturday 8th August 2009
At Station Park, Pumpherston
Rose played their first competitive fixture of the Season on Saturday 8th August at Pumpherston in
the Sectional League Cup. On paper the fixture may have been listed as competitive but in reality it was far from being a true competition as Rose dominated this fixture throughout against a Pumphy side which looked short in almost every department.
Rose lined up in a curious formation which was somewhere between a 5-3-2 and a 3-5-2 withMcEwan and McDermott filling the wing back roles and Wilson, Ward and Donnelly as three central defenders.
Herd and Coyne looked extremely lively up front and proved to be too much for the home defence to cope with. On several occasions one of them managed to beat the offside trap to go one on one with the home side’s keeper who began to look as if he was all that there was to prevent a rout. However he was unable to do anything to prevent the Rose opener when a deep cross from the left was headed cleverly back across the goal and Coyne swivelled and volleyed into the top left hand corner from 10 yards out. Shortly afterwards Bradley whose role was to get forward whenever possible limped off to be replaced by McDowall.
The second goal was not long in coming and although the drive from just inside the corner of the penalty area was sweetly hit by McDowall the keeper appeared to be attempting to swot a passing wasp rather than getting contact with the ball which flew past him into the net.
Half-time 0-2.
Rose started the second half where they had left off the first and after only 6 minutes Herd added a third with a well taken run and finish. The game was won and Rose brought on McLennan and Parkin for Wilson and McDermott. Further goals followed from McEwan, Hogg, McLennan and in the dying seconds Coyne rounded off an excellent individual display with his second, a tap in to make it 7-0 at the end.
A good start by Rose who have often struggled at this ground in previous seasons. The next 4 fixtures in this competition are unlikely to be so easy. With competition for places being so fierce this season in all positions we can perhaps expect to see further changes in personnel and formation.
