Minutes for Court Meeting April 09

Court of The Deacons of the Ancient and Royal Burgh of Linlithgow

Report from Court Meeting 7 April 2009

Provost Norman Cummings Presiding

The Provost and Baillies with their wives attended a function organised
by the Edinburgh March Riding Association.

A letter of resignation has been received from Catriona Grant who advises
that she has been unable to be as active in the Court as she would have
wished due to increased workload in her post as Head Teacher.
On behalf of the Court, the Clerk has thanked her for her service and
wished her well with her ongoing career.

The Street Fair on Saturday 9 May will be preceded by the Reed Band
marching from the West Port. Response from stallholders has been good.

Deacons Nights.
A suggestion from the Provost that the Deacons should take part in
the two processions was approved. As they pass the cross the Deacons
will peal off and join the Provost and Baillies at the Cross.
The Linlithgow and District pipe band cannot attend the Deacons nights
because of other engagements.
The Forth Bridges Accordion Band will take their place.


Following discussions with groups attending the ‘Getting to know you’ meeting,
the Loving Cup ceremony will be given some structure so new comers
are assisted with the ceremony.
The Town Crier will call forward the Deacon and My Lord of each organisation.

Crying of The Marches.
Friday 12 June 2009 starting from outside the Star and Garter at 1.00 pm.
The Court welcomed the assistance of the Linlithgow Bridge and
Linlithgow Primary schools who will each bring twelve pupils to join the ‘Crying’
The Provost will speak to the other schools asking if they could also take part.

Two second hand storage containers were purchased and
thanks were recorded to Jamie Smart for allowing their location at his farm.

Deacon Tom Smith is leading the team to build a float.

The Linlithgow and Bo’ ness Rotary Club are again sponsoring the decorated bicycles. They are also running the Duck Race again for funds to the Marches and Gala day. Everyone was asked to support this.

The Provost’s Breakfast will have to be an early start this year.
8.15am at the Marquee.

Preparations for the Eve of Marches Dance were well underway.
Invitations wouild be going out within the next two weeks.

The usual Grand Prize Draw held by the Deacons Court is to be replaced this
year by a Raffle in conjunction with the Linlithgow Civic Festival Committee.
Tickets will be available at the next Court Meeting

Bailie Cunningham and Procession Convenor Green reported on a productive
first meeting with the Police, who have given assurances that the problems
encountered last year with official vehicles not being permitted to progress
beyond restricted traffic areas will not be repeated.

Bollards and seats around Cross Well which will require temporary removal
were identified, as were raised areas of cobbles which will require grading with tarmac.

Deacon Kerr undertook to discuss the fixing of Shields to the hoarding around Burgh Hallos steps with W.L.C.

Work party for building new bar sections was arranged for the evening of Monday 20th April at Preston.
